Concentration and Attention Session for VPSCIN
- April 25th, 2009 at 12:59 am
i was invited to my first VPS CIN network function earlier this week. it was a talk by Gavin Freeman about ‘the Business Olympian’. Engaging, entertaining and informative the hour (or was it an hour and half) flew by; we were asked to count basketball passes (not much skill required there) but the trick was to see/not see the gorilla walking through the game! (i didnt’ see it … didn’t even believe it when i was showed the video again - thought I must have somehow seen the wrong video).
We watched an Olympian shoot arrows into a target whilst we made extraordinary amounts of noise, we watched Olympians be hosed and generally bothered and annoyed during ‘distraction training’. Keen to improve my own concentration skills (i sit opposite the kitchen at work) I have ordered the book from the local library and have downloaded the sample chapter posted on-line.
I am thrilled and delighted to find such a forum as VPS CIN exists for Public Sector people. I will be spreading the word far and wide here at Transport.

We also had the opportunity to touch a real Bronze Elite Medal - what a thrill - how often can you go home and tell your young boys that you did that at work today!!

Yet another excellent VPSCIN event. A fascinating insight into the professionalism and thorough preparation of our Elite archers. In the business world these themes are equally as important and go a long way to achieving success in your chosen field. This event has made me think more about preparation and rehearsal, especially for delivering effective presentations. Thanks Gavin and Tim.

I enjoyed (and lernt a lot about myself) at the Gavin Freeman workshop on Friday. The visual of the Elite archer will help me to think about the issues that were raised during the workshop. I am a regular at CIN workshops and feel that the workshops build on my education for work and life. Keep up the good work.

I was booked with a colleague to attend the session but work intervened and she didn’t attend but I am so glad I did as it was a fabulous. There were lots of thought provoking ideas about how to enhance your concentration and performance, particularly in really stressful situations. I loved the video of the athletes trying to do archery with a hose in front of their face so that they had to learn to concentrate despite the overwhelming physical distraction, which eventually paid off in the leadup to Athens with all the rain they faced. It was such a tangible demonstration of Gavin’s point about taking something to the extreme so you can ensure you are ready to deal with whatever you are confronted with in a work sense. I did take an extra copy of the quiz which I had my colleague complete and it was a perfect intro to explain the session to her. Let’s get Gavin back for a longer session!
RSCA Qld Presentation.
Quite possibly the best event I have attended by RCSA - great content and speaker. Makes a nice change to get someone out of the industry that the subject matter is still relevant that we can implement in our organisation and daily role.
Great speaker. Very clear, well spoken and presented really well.
The presenter was exceptional - very interactive
This seminar was booked by my manager, and I must admit that on initial thought I wasn't overly sure of what to expect, and whether the seminar would simply be conducted by some out-of-touch, 60 year old "expert" that proclaimed to know it all ~ however I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The topics discussed were very relevant in the short period of time allocated for the presentation, and I walked away with some knowledge and additional insight into thought processes that I otherwise very likely wouldn't have thought about it. Well done all round.
I found the interactive approach, really loosened every one up - overall really good.
Great just the right amount of professionalism and humour, kept the audience engaged.
Gave us just enough info to get us interested and buy his book.
Great style of presentation - very interactive and thought provoking - would've been good to have a longer session.

“A wonderfully engaging presentation that left the team understanding what it takes to be motivated and dedicated to be the best that they can.
The fact that Gavin related this through his experience with the sporting world and applied it with such clarity to our investment business only made it the more enjoyable“

Gavin has a warm, friendly and engaging style and made an immediate connection with the audience. He superbly combined expert advice, audience interaction and use of audio-visual technology to completely win over conference goers who were at the end of a long three day event.
His ability to relate complex conceptions performance improvement from the sporting area to the World of business and government was first class. Gavin was formally judged the best speaker by our delegates.

Hudson
"Gavin provided Hudson with an engaging and insightful presentation on two fronts. Firstly a chance to look at the world of sport and athletics from the inside and secondly, an understanding of what business can learn through the lens of sporting success. The clients in attendance were genuinely enthralled by the presentation which was demonstrated by the volume of questions at Q&A and the very positive feedback Hudson received from the event. Gavin's presentation was thought provoking and highly entertaining, we look forward to future events with Gavin."
Gareth Flynn, Practice Manager, Hudson.

Hi Gavin,
As we discussed, the parallels between sporting & corporate teams are often overlooked, but very pragmatic & clear once comparison occurs. I was very impressed with the concise & relevant points in your presentation. Several people in my team also attended & were similarly impressed.
Cheers

Gavin,
Just a quick note to let you know that I enjoyed the session last week - it
was good to reinforce a bunch of ideas and strategies that I currently
employ. The session was also thought provoking in many ways and I'd like to
explore some ideas with my fellow Employees.
Thanks very much.
